About the Artist

Midnight Blue

Statement

From my studio in Sarasota, I see a multitude of tropical plants typical for Florida. The foliage, the bright light, the brilliant blues and greens of the Gulf of Mexico provide inspiration for my artwork. There are interesting shapes and color combinations everywhere.

My artwork is nature-based, but abstract. While my inspiration comes from nature, I don’t copy what I see. The fragments, vibrancy, colors, and shapes interest me. Somewhat like molecular cuisine, which deconstructs the original and, with the help of various techniques, reassembles it in a new and creative manner. You can still recognize the source, but not in a literal way.

Experimentation is an integral part of my artwork. I like to combine different techniques such as collage, inks, acrylics, silver leaf, and resin. I have a concept of what I would like to achieve, but there are always unpredictable aspects and surprise effects that happen when one works with inks and collage. That’s what makes it so interesting to create a new piece.

My artwork is created on wooden substrates and finished with a coat of epoxy resin, which gives it additional depth.
